First Annual Sankofa Concert to be Held July 6 at Cascades Park

On Saturday, July 6, 2019, from 7:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m., the first annual Sankofa Concert, based on the award-winning musical, “Underground,” will be held at the Cascades Park Amphitheater. This concert will feature song and dance from “Underground,” a short film about an enslaved man’s journey to earn freedom for him and his family. Hosted by the Cross-Cultural Coalition at Railroad Square, this concert is free and open to the public.

Highlighting “a slave story told through song,” Sankofa’s first concert, which will consist of “breath stopping” songs from “Underground,” is family-friendly and also teaches attendees about the history of the Underground Railroad. Directed by Lili Forbes, this concert features music by Music by: Nicholas Wheeler, Michael Gilreath, Curtis Bryant, James Deckle, John Hardon II, Tom and Judy Coogle, Noah Jackson, and Christopher Rochester.

“Underground” was written by Tallahassee native and Florida State University and Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University alum, Akil DuPont. The film has accumulated 2 student Emmy awards and 21 film festival awards since its release.
